Picture Books for Back to School Nerves

I can hardly believe that we’re talking about back to school already. I have a box in our spare room with sharpened yellow pencils, reams of paper, folders, tissues, and the all important hand sanitizer ready to give to my girls’ teachers in return for another year of education. This time last year we were preparing for Kindergarten. Now it’s into 1st grade for Miss 6 and Junior Kindergarten for Miss 4 (who I’m sure was just born but the candles on her cake say otherwise).

As well as buying supplies and new school shoes, we prepare for back to school with books. Lots of books. Here are some of our favourites…

The Kissing Hand – a classic for a reason. Emily’s teacher read it to her class on their first day of Kindergarten and we’ve performed the sweet ritual every drop-off, and even bedtime, since.

Best Frints at Skrool – a new one and so much fun. The girls enjoyed figuring out the alien language and I enjoyed the message about how to include everyone, old and new frints, in your fun.

Malala’s Magic Pencil – An important reminder about the value of education and the power of speaking up. An inspiring read about an inspiring girl.

School’s First Day of School – Even the school is nervous about the first day of school but in the end, it can’t wait for the second day of school. Even if the kids fill the place with noise and squirt nose-milk everywhere.
